Hasbro has you covered this holiday season
With the impending December holidays just around corner, and the festivities of Christmas for those that celebrate, finding great gifts and holiday activities are the order of the day. With three children and a very long holiday that lies ahead, I can’t tell you how delighted I was when Hasbro Toys with the help of Atmosphere Communications sent us a fantastic toy hamper, and some exciting information about some really fantastic toys and games, that you can get to add to your holiday fun and also to give you some really great gift ideas. My kids are going to be over the moon, when the first week of holidays are done and the novelty has worn off, they will start proclaiming “I’m bored, what can I do?” I can present them with these really great items and I know they are going to be more than ecstatic.
These three items and the other great things from Hasbro I am going to chat about, are available at most leading toy retailers, of which one of my favorites is Hamleys in the V&A Waterfront. So let me tell you about the fabulous things we got, that are going to make my kids smile from ear to ear this holiday season and for long after.
Enter the magical world of My Little Pony.
When I was a little girl, I adored all my My Little Ponies that I had. I had quite a few, but sadly they never made it with me to adulthood (I know the importance of keeping the classic toys for my Grand Kids now of course, and will make sure that I treasure these certain toys long after my own children have finished playing with them) I was very happy when a few years ago I saw that the My Little Pony range had made it back into the toy stores and given that I now had two girls of my own, I couldn’t wait to spoil them. The biggest difference now is that there are many more great things in the range now too. In the magical world of My Little Pony, a whole world of pony friends wait, ready for fun and adventures. There is Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity and Pinkie Pie and together they discover the magic of friendship. The ponies continue to engage and inspire girls around the world this festive season and with entertainment, toys, publishing, digital gaming and lifestyle licensing to choose from; my girl will have the chance to make these characters uniquely their own and create memorable experiences that will become a cherished part of their childhood. I really love the fact that My Little Pony encourages girls to play together, teaching them important values based on sociability and sharing friendships. My two girls play for hours together with their ponies and accessories. My son even joins in on occasion and they have a complete blast. I have been known to play along too and secretly adore this time of thinking back to my own childhood.
Head outdoors and get “Nerfed”
I have a very enthusiastic, fun-loving and happy 6-year-old boy. He likes nothing more than playing outside and is in his element when he has accomplices to play a good old game of good guy/bad guy or something to that effect. To solve this we bought water blasters last season for all three children and have regretted it ever since. Being on holiday in summer, it means it’s time to head outdoors again but this time without the water blasters. The kids are rather going to get nerfed! Nerf works like a water blaster – but has the advantage that nothing gets soaked. The colourful toy blaster, which shoots soft foam darts which I love and although we have strict rules about not pointing towards the face the darts are great and safe. I am pretty glad about his because often, over excitable kids really getting into the swing of it and sometimes take aim at my leg or back just for fun. The Nerf Blaster range is really great in my book because entices kids away from the TV or the PC and encourages them to play with each other by providing action-packed and safe fun, indoors and outdoors. An interactive Nerf experience promotes movement, healthy competition, skill and coordination in a social environment.
Get creative with Play Doh
Play-Doh has been around for ever, but it’s just much cooler now in 2015. Play-Doh is the perfect solution to keep kids occupied and better yet, they will learn something while playing. Toddlers and young kids are engaged with sensory, open-ended activities, that help them prepare for the real world Hasbro says. Play-Doh activities not only encourage development of basics such as fine motor skills, but can also provide ideal ways to practice and nurture critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity. My youngest daughter who is three now, is at a stage where creating different things with Play-Doh is one of the things she absolutely loves best and can be busy with it for hours on end. Any child will be in total heaven with a range of fun Play-Doh playsets tools and characters, with activities that include colour-mixing, learning ABC’s, and bringing imagination to life. This coming season Play Doh launches their much-anticipated playsets. Marvel Smashdown Hulk gives boys the opportunity to build enemies or shapes and then squish them with Hulk Smashdown before starting over. Girls on the other hand can look forward to going on a Frozen sled adventure with Disney Frozen’s Ana, changing her dress colours or creating a snowy sparkly Olaf with a special mould or making beautiful Play-Doh rainbow hair for Rainbow Dash with the My Little Pony Rainbow Dash Salon playset.
For the board game lovers there are also a huge range of family fun options to consider, these classics are available now in quite a few different variations including travel, family and Junior editions. Classics like Monopoly now available in Monopoly Frozen edition as well as the Monopoly Here and Now World Edition that features Cape Town, the 80th anniversary edition and the soon to be launched Monopoly Cape Town edition (manufactured by Winning Moves under license from Hasbro). There’s fun for all ages in the Family Edition of the popular TRIVIAL PURSUIT game! Roll the dice and rack your brain for the answers to questions in the category you land on. Match wits with your whole family with TRIVIAL PURSUIT Family Edition!
Hours of fun and entertainment will be had with the very fun stacking game Jenga as well as the very classic Clue Cluedo Classic Mystery Game (and the portable on the go version) where reclusive millionaire Samuel Black’s been murdered in his mansion and it’s up to you to crack the case! Question everything to unravel the mystery. Who did it? Where? And with what weapon? Ransack the mansion for clues, ask cunning detective questions and leave no card unturned. Solve the murder first to win! Then of course let us not forget that you can add a twist of fun into any party or family night with Twister, the game that ties you up in knots.
There are some games that I am not familiar with but hope to play soon like the Guess Who? Grab and Go game that challenges who is the champion guesser? Maybe it’s you in this portable version of the classic Guess Who? game! Every time you ask your opponent a yes or no question, the answer gets you closer to who’s on their Mystery Card. But you better watch out, because they’ll be asking you questions too. Another one is The Game of Life game. You do it by choosing the life you want! Go to college, take the family path, have kids, or see what happens when unexpected twists change the game. Will you receive a fortune and lose it as quickly as you got it? Will you need a bank loan to pay a debt? Once everyone reaches the end of the game at retirement, everyone pays their debts and adds up their wealth. The player with the most money wins the game, so make sure it’s you!
Taboo is the game of unspeakable fun. Use creative, carefully worded clues to get your team to guess words fast. But don’t mention unmentionables, or you’ll get the squeaker and lose the point. This one sounds like one I will have to get to play with our friends when next we have a summer braai and a few glasses of wine and the kids have all gone down.
Our family love board games. We play them year round. Some of these games stretch back as far in my memory as maybe three or four years old, which is how old my youngest child is now. I truly hope that she will have the same recollection when she reaches 40. This just goes to show you that you will never lose the classics. There is just so much fun to be had with this selection from Hasbro
