This morning my Facebook showed me a picture of my daughter Mila and reminded me that 2 years ago my dear Son co-hearsed his then not yet 4-year-old sister in allowing him to “make her fringe look pretty.” Now before you stop and say “But you are a bad mother, why weren’t you there to stop it? Why was your Son allowed to play with Scissors in the first place? Listen, we are all human, none of us perfect. My Son in my opinion and at that age was more than capable of using a pair of scissors and even more capable of understanding that he was actually doing something naughty. My husband was there as was our helper, he just managed like some kids do, to do it on the sly and nobody noticed.
I got a Whatsapp message at work late that fateful afternoon with this image. You can imagine my reaction when I opened the message to see this!
What do you say to something like that? First I laughed because of her face and then the reality sunk in. I realized what had just happened. Yes, hair grows back and she is only little, but seriously? Did he seriously just do that?
I showed a friend the picture and the first words out of her mouth were “She looks like Yolandi from Die Antwoord!” Yoh, that comment was both hilarious and extremely horrifying at the same time if such a thing is even possible.
So what do you do when your 4-year-old looks like a member of this Zef band? Hats, lots and lots of hats. I actually had to cancel a photo shoot because of it. There was no way I was having any more pictures of this catastrophic occurrence than we already had.
Well, 2 years later and the hair has all grown back and now needs to be clipped out of her face anyway. So I guess the chronically short fringe had its benefits. But doesn’t she look much happier here in this picture taken by Shante Hutton recently on our family photoshoot?
So what if anything, have I learned as a mother since this happened? So many things guys! I have learned most of all though that as a parent stuff is going to happen that is totally out of your control, even though you may think you have complete control. The best advice I have for that is to just roll with the punches and take it as it comes. It has a way of working out in the end.
If you want to see any more potential images from out of control situations in my parenting journey then meet me over on Instagram because you never know what you might get from me there because I have 3 kids so it’s really a lucky packet.
